It's In Your Genes Fashion Show

On Thursday, February 16, 2012, the Atlanta Jewish Gene Screen (AJGS) will sponsor the “It’s In Your Genes” event, a denim fashion show featuring new looks from Atlanta’s most stylish jean boutiques. The jean fashion show includes some of Atlanta’s top boutiques, including Bill Hallman, Raw Denim, Tootsies, and Izzy Maternity. The event, held at the Ocean’s Ballroom, Georgia Aquarium from 7:30 – 10:30 PM, will also be an educational opportunity to learn more about the need for screening for the prevention of Jewish Genetic Diseases.

In addition to the fashion show, the event’s featured celebrities will be Eli Kirshtein, from Top Chef Season 6, who was among the top five contestants on the show.  The event’s other celebrity will be Jordan Pious, who won Amazing Race Season 16, with his brother as his partner.

The Atlanta Jewish Gene Screen offers accessible genetic counseling and screening for 19 preventable Jewish genetic diseases, for which 1 in 5 Jews is a carrier.  AJGS was founded by Randy and Caroline Gold, who were not screened properly before the birth of their daughter Eden, who was born in 2008 with Mucolipidosis Type 4 (ML4), a progressive and debilitating neurological disorder. AJGS is funded through The Marcus Foundation, in partnership with the Victor Center for the Prevention of Jewish Genetic Diseases at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia.

According to Randy Gold, “This jeans fashion show is another way for us to bring focus

and attention to the fact that many Jews are carriers of at least one of the 19 known preventable Jewish genetic diseases and that a simple blood test can help ensure healthy  children.  The only way to know if you are a carrier is to be screened or to have an affected child.  Screening for all of the 19 diseases by your doctor or Atlanta Jewish Gene  Screen can save your family from an avoidable tragedy.”

Tickets for the event are $35 which includes open beer and wine bar (for those 21 and older) and hors d'oeuvres, as well as the fashion event, DJ and dancing. Guests can upgrade to VIP ticket price of $75 for free parking, access to special lounge and private bar and reserved seating for the fashion show.

For more information about the event or to learn about a simple blood test to determine whether or not you are a carrier for these genes, visit www.atlantajewishgenescreen.org or call 404-561-7478 or email info@atljewishgenescreen.org.
